Music does not only affect the child’s intelligence but also has a psychological impact. It is not just classical music by Mozart, but stimulation from other types of music is also required.
Many pregnant women also listen to classical music. Classical music by Mozart is the most widely chosen option. Some studies abroad states that giving stimulation with classical music is the most effective therapy applied since the baby is still in the womb. The study believes that when baby is aged above 8 weeks, the baby’s fetal brain begins to function, and the auditory is the simplest sense that is familiarly stimulated.
The role of music is really great in stimulating the brain development of children. The effect can affect children’s cognitive abilities, namely the ability to recognize or interpret their environment in the form of language, memory and visual.
Classical music is considered as the best to give stimulus in the auditory system for the fetus in the womb since the rhythm of classical music has a frequency that varies by issuing beautiful tones. Classical music has a method and levels contrasted to other music.
Music is also great for managing the child’s emotion, for example, if you listen to soft music, the child will calm down, and if you play a cheerful music the child will look happy. Child who listens to music since he/she is in the womb usually as he/she grows up later on can easily adapt to and learn music.
In addition, the effect of music can also be felt by children who learn a musical instrument. By learning a musical instrument, the motor skills of the hand will be honed. In fact, according to the experience of some people, the children who study music academically show satisfactory grades in school.
Music does not only affect the intelligence of children but has a psychological impact for those who hear it. Music can enhance a child’s brain growth since music stimulates the brain cell growth. Music can make us relaxed and cheerful, which is a positive emotion. Positive emotions are what make a person’s function of thinking maximized. It is not only for children; even we who are already adults will feel calmness when listening to it.
Music is also beneficial for reducing stress, depression and anxiety. Music is also good for relaxation, activating the body, improving the memory and consciousness. For example, if we listen to music with a jovial mood then we will also become carefree.
Providing stimulation with music therapy in children is most effectively applied since the child is in the womb until the child reaches the age of 3 years. It is because a child’s brain during this period experiences rapid growth. Choose a same time each day with duration of about 30 minutes. We recommend that you do it when the fetus or the child is awake so that he/she can listen to the sound when the stimuli are active. In that way, the child’s memory will also be aroused and intensified. Music therapy in children can also reduce disorder dyslexia, autism, and other psychological disorders.
Efforts to provide stimulation of the children’s brain should continue to be given after the child’s birth and in infancy. Providing music therapy to affect the intelligence of children is not the only one factor alone. When a child is born, the type of stimulus given can not only be sound, but it must be more diverse. As a stimulus to recognize colors and objects that are nearby, the effect is very good to train intelligence and personality of children.
When the child was two years old, children usually begin to ask many questions. Many parents respond those attacks of children’s curiosity by giving a short answer, even trying to stop the child’s questions. Yet, precisely at this time, parents should try to stimulate a child with a conversation that can trigger to another conversation that can educate the child. It is also an excellent learning phase for the brain development of children.
Virtually, all types of music can be enjoyed by pregnant women, because the most important thing is that the music listened shall be to please the mother, which automatically also works to her child. At that time, the child is not considering the music as a rhythm, as we listen to music, but only as a sound vibration that makes the child becomes more sensitive to vibration.
It’s just so far, there is new research that reveals that classical music is the best music that has an influence on children’s intelligence. Actually, there are other music that can also affect children’s intelligence. But unfortunately, no one has studied whether pop music, jazz or traditional has an influence on children’s intelligence. In essence, the various vibrations which are regular and pleasing to the ear will stimulate the senses of hearing of children well. Only, if a child is not listening to classical music, will he/she not be as good as children who listen to classical music? So far, it is not yet known for sure.
Music also serves as a therapy. Therefore, if parents want to take advantage of the function of music as therapy at home, beside the result will be very good for child development, including in terms of concentration, it can also create a more vibrant atmosphere of the house but it all depends on the music installed. Based on the results of research, listening to music in the morning will increase the concentration of those who listen.
Dr. Djohan Salim, a music therapist, argues that the myth of playing classical music, especially Mozart’s to children from an early age can increase intelligence, has not yet been proven its legitimacy. “It is possibly because psychologist Don Campbell who first buzzed this myth only associated intelligence with mathematical ability since western music, especially classical music, uses the special temporal which is the part of the science, ” he said.
Djohan added only if there are studies that prove classical music can enhance the activity of the nerves of the brain, it is very individualized. The possibility is that some of these children experience a feeling of relaxation while listening to classical music, but some are not or even feeling stressed instead. “Generally, if the psychic atmosphere of a baby is supporting, he/she can receive the information properly even though he/she is not listening to classical music,” he said.
Music is not created to afflict its receptor; further Djohan explained that assessment and function of music have a chance at the hearing. “We must be more critical, why classical music makes children smarter? Why it should be the work of Mozart? How about the effects of other music? Why does music that is more easily understood not make kids smarter?” he said.
Djohan also questioned the length frequency feature of Mozart’s music that it can penetrate the skin of the abdomen of pregnant mothers up to the hearing of the fetus. “In fact, each music has the basic elements of musical pitch (sound frequency), tempo, timbre (sound color), and dynamics. So what distinguishes the music of Mozart’s music with others? ” Djohan added.
Djohan explained that music as therapy is used as the medium of music to influence human psychology. And human beings are very complex, so that is why music therapy should be made based on the needs of each individual. “In addition, we should realize that the fetus already has his own music while in the womb,” he said. The music for the fetus is the heartbeat of the baby’s mother.
According to him, the heart rate has four basic elements of the creation of a musical, starting from the pitch, tempo, timbre, to the dynamics. “Those four elements are then internalized within the fetus. And as long as it is intended for therapy, it should be made based on individual comfort. It means that it is possible for its constituent elements to be not perfect. Though it is only three or two, but as long as it’s part of the sound has been internalized, the music has become a therapeutic medium, “he said.
However, Djohan agreed that music is useful to cause relaxation and tranquility in a person, so that his/her psyche conditions become healthier. “Relaxation meant here does not only make a person falling asleep and resting. But, more on how music can directly affect the emotional aspect to then influence one’s convenience and create the perfect psychophysical so that the immune defense system and can function optimally, ” he said.
To that end, music as therapy should be based on the implementation of therapeutic procedures. The first thing done determines the diagnosis of psychological disorders encountered, to then determine the comfort target. After that, introduce various kinds of music to find what kind of music which is able to create a comfortable psychological condition. “Hence, at the beginning of therapy, five to ten minutes will be provided to figure out what kind of music has direct psychological influence,” explained Djohan.
Basically everyone has a memory in the brain that can associate a certain type of sound or music in the past that can soothe him/her. “Music that has a good association in memory to soothing will raise body temperature, so that a person’s body will be warm and make the person entering the relaxation,” he said. So, Djohan explained, music used as therapy can not directly cure diseases. Music is only utilized as a supplement and supports the healing process of the disease. Therefore, from now on, choose music that can warm your body for a cheap relaxation.
