Babies usually were born with the head covered with soft hair which has light color. The soft hair that has been in their hair since they were born is called baby’s hair or vellus. Vellus is different with lanugo (the soft hair that doesn’t have pigment and grow in the all part of their body) but both of them will disappear by themselves.

Three of four months after babies were born, the hair usually disappears. The babies are usual to lose some parts of their hair at the head because it scratches with the bed cover, the cover in her playing area, or chair car. After it disappears, then grow new hair. The new hair usually grows in larger amount so it will cover the skin head surface and it follows certain pattern.

Baby Hair Growth is Hard to guess

David s. Geller, M.D. the pediatrician at Boston Children Hospital and the lecturer at Harvard Medical Scholl said that the pattern of hair growing process is hard to guess because it is different each other. There are some babies who were born with head full of hair and some of them only have few hair.

The time when baby’s hair grows is different at each baby. Dr Geller said that after the hair that has been in their hair since they were born will disappear in the first six months – there are some babies whose hair will grow directly but with the different color and texture. But some of babies need longer time to wait their hair grows.

Whenever the hair grows, just be calm. Your children will have normal hair growing process though they need longer time to wait their hair grows.

Jennifer Margulis in her book entitled “Why Do Some Babies Have Lots of Hair and Other Have None at All?” explains that at the baby’s head skin there are 100.000 folikel (the pocket where hair grows with the oil gland that will soften hair and head skin). But as people grow older, some folikel stop to grow hair. Many things that have been known about baby’s hair are only speculation said the writer of book entitled “Babies Do That: Baffling Baby Behavior Explained”.

Margulis explains that, some babies still have no hair in their head in their first birthday but some babies have long and thick hair even it is hard to be combed. Maybe it is because some babies have hair that grows slowly than other babies. She guesses it is because the hormone and genetic factor that influence the pattern of hair growing process.

For you who feel worried because your children’s hair grow so slow and it will affect their hair look (straight or curly), Margulis explains that based on the expert, those things decided by the shape of hair folikel. The round hair pocket will grow the straight hair and the crescent hair pocket will grow curly hair. She also said that the pattern of hair growing process will not decide how thick and how long their hair later.

These are some tips in facing the slow hair growing process:

  • Just be calm, this is not a problem that you need to solve (except there is serious disorder at head skin)
  • Just be patient, later it will grow.
  • Being thankful. You don’t need to wash their hair right?
  • Avoid having negative thought. Don’t forget, about this problem, some people only speculate.
  • You can try, but don’t be obsessed. You can do any things that you believe it can faster the hair growing process. As long as it is not dangerous and it can make you more comfortable, you should not be stressed because obsessed with the result.

Try to not keep looking upside. Try to not always comparing your children’s hair with other children’s hair. At the outside there, there must be children who have bald head for longer time than your children. Every child is unique. It is better to watch their positivity than their hair problem.

Hopefully the explanation above will not make you worried anymore about your children’s head that still have no hair. Someday, you don’t need to be jealous to see other children who have beautiful hair.
