Kernicterus is a kind of rain damage that is caused by jaundice disease in a newborn baby. It can cause the disturbance in the cerebral palsy and hearing function, it also can cause the difficulty in learning.
The jaundice disease is caused by the high level of bilirubin, a yellow pigment that is produced by liver and it is contained in the blood stream. Bilirubin can cause a color change in the skin and eyes. Jaundice disease is generally happened in newborn, and it is usually can recover by itself. But, if baby having excess bilirubin level and doesn’t get any treatment, then it can reach baby’s brain so it can cause kernicterus.
The symptoms of kernicterus are:
- The skin color is yellow.
- The excessive sleepiness so that baby is hard to be woken.
- Fussy.
- Baby is often to cry.
- Baby’s body feels very weak.
Kernicterus can be handled by phototherapy, by placing baby under the blue light or UV lamp. If baby’s condition have already reach very extreme level, doctor will conduct blood transfusion in order to expel Bilirubin from the blood.
