The number of axons in the nerve cells is protected by a fat layer which is known as myelin. The layer of myelin is formed by two specific cells which are called neurolemnocyte (Schwan cells) and oligodendrocyte. The Schwan cells forms the protector for peripheral nerve cells, while oligodendrocyte forms the protector of central nerve cells. The outer part of the myelin is called neurilema and it is composed from neurolemocyte cells.
Myelin which protects the axon can be comprised of a hundred layers. A group of neurolemocyte cells will only form a layer for an axon, while the other axons are protected by the other group of neurolemocyte. This thing is not happened for oligodendrocyte cells. The group of oligodendrocytes is able to form several protector layers for few axons.
So, what is exactly the purpose of this myelinization? Myelinization is maturity period of veil nerve cells and also fiber nerve cells. According to the fact, a nerve cell which possess myelin protector layer is able to deliver the message (stimulation) faster than the nerve cells which the axon doesn’t possess the protector layer. This delivering by myelinated nerve cells could reach the velocity until 120 meters per second, while the nerve cells which do not possess myelin only reach the velocity between 0.7 to 2.3 meters per second. According to Dr. Arthur R Jensen (University of California), the velocity of the message (stimulation) delivering by nerve cells is the key factor which ascertains baby’s intelligence.
Myelinization process runs very fast from newborn until one year old. If myelinization process goes well, then the responds of your baby will run well too. The myelinization process will last until baby is five years old. But the fastest process of myelinization is in the first year of baby’s life. Usually, if the first-year-period had been past then the process will run slow, and it will bring no-meaning-change even if you try to give stimulation to your baby.
However, you can know if the myelinization process doesn’t run properly, the easiest way is by observing the physical development of your baby. For an instance, if your baby should have been able to lying on their tummy, but in fact they haven’t been able yet, it means there’s something wrong in their physical development (myelinization process).
